OUR CHURCH

St. John has a very rich history. The first written history places the first meeting of the church St. John African Union Methodist Protestant Church (AUMP) in 1855, but oral history places the first meeting in 1848. The cabin was used as a church and school where female neighbors came to instruct the students free of charge. Unfortunately, a fire in the early 20th century destroyed the original structure in 1866. Church members decided to erect a new edifice which was completed 1867 at a cost of $1,000.

Throughout the city of Newark new roads and the development of the University of Delaware, St. John remains a beacon of steadfast light declaring the goodness of Jesus Christ. We have come a very long way and was a congregation and as people since the early years of our beloved church.
